Movie Review: Sharknado

Sharknado is a horror science fiction movie that features sharks being sucked up into a tornado and falling from the sky. The city of Los Angeles is in great danger until a broken family teams up to try and save humankind. In the movie there are many scenes that display gruesome and horrific accidents that are a result of this natural disaster, such as a school bus emerging in shark filled water.

The team is shown traveling all around the city fighting off these sharks with weapons such as chainsaws and dynamite. In the school bus scene the main character uses a rope to reach the bus from the bridge above. There are many other dramatic scenes such as this one that display panic, heroism and thrill.

The nature of this movie certainly sparked some controversy. Some found it marvelous and wrote reviews on Google such as “This film is a reflection of our society, it has foreseen the future, it has opened my third eye to many new possibilities in life” and “I don’t know why this just has a mere 58% percent rating by my fellow google users. This movie is an absolute masterpiece in every sense of the word.” Other’s did not agree and wrote things like “One of the worst rubbish disaster movies I have ever watched” and “so bad it’s funny.”

After reading the reviews it stuck out to me that a lot of people commented on the poor animation quality. What was ironic to me was that some spoke about how bad the graphics were and put one star but others wrote the same thing and put five stars.

Some people loved Sharknado others hated it; but one thing that everyone could agree on was that fact that it was horribly made. Here is an example

This movie reminded me of another movie I watched, San Andreas, because they both featured the result of natural disasters. However, while I was watching San Andreas the graphics felt so real to me that I was often questioning if they were real or not. Here are examples of action scenes from each movie:

San Andreas:

Sharknado:

Both clips feature similar elements; bloody gory injuries, buildings collapsing, explosions, helicopters, etc. However, when I was watching the San Andreas clip I felt scared. The buildings crumbling, the people falling from the sky, the chef on fire, and the panic in everyone’s demeanor all felt so realistic to me even though I know that it is just animation. When I was watching the Sharknado I felt humored. I could pick out so easily what was edited. The sharks flying in the air, the stomach injury that one character got from a shark falling on him and the actual tornado itself sweeping through the city were so poorly edited that it did not communicate the dramatic feel that the director intended.

Here is what I thought of Sharknado; I enjoyed watching it but I did not enjoy it for the reasons that the directors and screenwriters wanted me to. I enjoyed it because it made me laugh. I agree with what one of the Google reviews said; that “it’s so bad it’s funny.” I would recommend this movie to a friend looking for a funny light hearted movie. I feel as though the genre classification “horror” is very misleading to someone who is looking for a scary movie to watch.
